Cooking from the Fridge

Bonnefanten museum, Maastricht, Netherlands
11 November 2026 – 5 September 2027
Group exhibition

The exhibition Cooking from the Fridge will be on display for nearly a year, highlighting (inter)national masterpieces and underscoring the importance of South Limburg as a hub for contemporary art.

For this exhibition, twenty-seven guest curators have selected artworks from a diverse group of artists whose works have been acquired over the past thirty years for the collections of Bonnefanten Maastricht, SCHUNCK Heerlen, and Het Domein Sittard. The result is a unique collaboration among three museums, presenting an entire floor of surprising, stimulating, and multi-layered displays. The exhibition features a mix of painting, photography, film and video, installations, and sculptures.

The exhibition also marks the upcoming departure of Stijn Huijts as director of Bonnefanten. Over the past three decades, Huijts has played a key role in developing the collections of these three institutions in the South Limburg Cultural Region. While he initiated this special exhibition, its realization was entrusted to 28 guest curators from the Netherlands and abroad, all of whom have made significant contributions to his artistic development over the past thirty years.

A companion publication, featuring essays, interviews, and a visual overview of thirty years of collecting, will be released alongside the exhibition.

Cooking from the Fridge is an initiative by Stijn Huijts, in special collaboration with Het Nieuwe Domein in Sittard and SCHUNCK Museum in Heerlen. The guest curators include Maria Barnas, Lex ter Braak, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Valentijn Byvanck, Ann Demeester, Marian Duff, Hu Fang & Zhang Wei, Krist Gruijthuijsen, Ad Himmelreich, Lene ter Haar, Patricia Kaersernhout, Fabian de Kloe, Victoria Noorthoorn, Hoor Al Qasimi, Catharien Romijn, Wilma Sütö, Jennifer Tee, Ranti Tjan, Jerika Vertegaal, Wieteke van Zeil, and Kitty Zijlmans, along with Bonnefanten curators Paula van den Bosch, Celien Govaerts, Roxy Jongewaard, Mees Knarren, and Jip van Reijen.
