Huis Willet-Holthuysen, Amsterdam, Netherlands
16 October 2026 – 4 April 2027
Group exhbition
Starting Friday, October 16, 2026, Huis Willet-Holthuysen will host the exhibition Plantage aan de gracht, exploring the colonial history tied to Amsterdam’s wealth. The opulence of Herengracht’s grand homes is deeply linked to colonial trade and the exploitation of enslaved people on global plantations.
The exhibition highlights two former residents, Willem Gideon Deutz and Fredrik Berewout, who were involved in the plantation trade. Deutz financed over a hundred plantations, while Berewout owned several, including Plantation Jagtlust in Suriname. The exhibition sheds light on those who profited from the violent plantation system and the lives of the enslaved people trapped within it. The exhibition will also feature work by artist Natasja Kensmil. Dolores Leeuwin, a descendant of an enslaved woman from Plantation Jagtlust, guides visitors through this history via an audio tour.
