Koninklijk Paleis (Royal Palace) Amsterdam

Group exhibition

Instituted by King Willem III 150 years ago, the Royal Award for Modern Painting stands as one of the Netherlands’ oldest and most prestigious honors for young artists. Open to painters under 35, the award celebrates bold creativity and innovation in contemporary painting.

To mark this milestone, we present Trailblazers—a special exhibition in the palace’s galleries and rooms. Curated by Mirjam Westen and Richard Kofi, the show features seventeen former award participants (1980–2020) whose work redefines the boundaries of painting. Through diverse approaches to form, material, and subject matter, these artists embody the award’s mission: to nurture individuality and artistic risk-taking.

The exhibition was inaugurated by His Majesty the King and Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix on 14 July 2021.
